Furniture supply chains are long, and that is exactly why this needs stating. This is our position on modern slavery, forced labour and responsible sourcing.
Our position
The Windmill Nursery does not tolerate slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour, human trafficking or child labour in any part of our business or supply chain. We treat any credible report of it as a matter for immediate action.
Legal context
Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires a formal slavery and human trafficking statement from commercial organisations with an annual turnover of £36 million or more. The Windmill Nursery is below that threshold and is not legally required to publish one. We publish this statement voluntarily because the commitment applies regardless of turnover.
What we expect from suppliers
- no forced, bonded, indentured or involuntary prison labour;
- no child labour, and compliance with local minimum-age law;
- wages and working hours that comply with applicable local law;
- freedom of association and the right to leave employment on reasonable notice;
- workers hold their own identity documents and pay no recruitment fees;
- a safe workplace, and the same expectations passed down to sub-contractors.
Timber and materials
We expect suppliers to source timber legally and to be able to evidence its origin on request. We will not knowingly sell products made from illegally harvested timber.
How we act on concerns
Where a concern is raised about a supplier we ask for evidence, and we suspend purchasing where the response is inadequate or the concern is substantiated. Anyone — customer, worker or member of the public — can report a concern in confidence to support@thewindmillnursery.co.uk marked “Confidential — sourcing”.
If you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact the police on 999. The UK Modern Slavery Helpline is available on 08000 121 700.
Review
We review this statement annually and update it when our supply arrangements change.
