Packaging, Recycling & Sustainability

Last updated: 19 August 2026

Furniture arrives in a lot of packaging. Here is what that packaging is, how to deal with it responsibly, and what we are and are not claiming about sustainability.

Our packaging

Products are shipped in corrugated cardboard with protective inserts. Depending on the item and the manufacturer these may include expanded polystyrene, moulded pulp, polyethylene foam or air-filled plastic. Packaging is chosen primarily to prevent transit damage — a damaged item that has to be shipped twice has a far greater impact than its packaging.

Recycling your packaging

  • Cardboard: flatten and recycle kerbside. Remove tape and staples first where you can.
  • Moulded pulp inserts: recyclable with cardboard in most areas.
  • Polythene film and air pillows: not usually collected kerbside; most large supermarkets accept soft plastics in their front-of-store recycling points.
  • Expanded polystyrene: rarely recycled kerbside — check your local authority’s household waste recycling centre.

Find your local rules at recyclenow.com. If you plan to return an item, keep the packaging until you are sure you are keeping the product.

Old furniture

We do not currently offer a take-back or disposal service for old furniture. Your local authority bulky waste collection, a household waste recycling centre, or a reuse charity are usually the best routes — usable furniture is often welcomed by reuse organisations. Anything with an electrical component must be disposed of separately under WEEE rules.

What we do not claim

We do not describe our products as “eco-friendly”, “carbon neutral” or “sustainable” as blanket marketing claims. Under the Green Claims Code such statements must be specific and evidenced, and we would rather say less than say something we cannot prove.

What we are working on

  • reducing plastic in inbound and outbound packaging where transit protection allows;
  • improving product listings so items last longer — accurate dimensions, load ratings and care guidance;
  • supplying replacement parts rather than whole replacements where a repair will do.
